Sponging Capital of the World
A multicultural tourist destination that attracts visitors from around the world
Commercial Sponging, Fishing and Shrimping still take place today on the Docks
The City of Tarpon Springs has budgeted $1,000,000 dedicated to improving the Sponge Docks and Dodecanese Boulevard. How this money will be used to transform the area is up to you. Please participate in this community outreach project and help us shape the future of the Sponge Docks for generations to come!
|The Sponge Docks working waterfront tourist district is one of Florida's
most unique attractions located on Dodecanese Boulevard, a pleasant
two-lane road paralleling the Anclote River. A large assortment of shops,
restaurants, bakeries and other gathering places are also found here.
With a rich mix Greek heritage, culture and old-world charm, the Sponge
Docks offers visitors an experience that is different from any other destination in the Tampa Bay area.
|The first phase of the project will focus on obtaining sufficient public input
from all interested stakeholders to "frame the project" and guide the future
design elements. To learn more click on the Schedule link on the left side
of the webpage.
Upcoming Workshops and Events
|A successful tourist district is not complete until its open space, streets
and sidewalks have been "furnished". The items that may be included as
part of this project are sidewalks, benches, trash receptacles, etc. These
are the elements that help to reinforce the character of the area.
